A Heavenly Henley Houseboat

3 years ago I spent a long weekend on a traditional narrow-boat, sailing along the canal from Guildford to Godalming. As fun as that was, it was nothing compared to the houseboat I had the pleasure of staying in over the course of 3 happy, hazy days and nights last weekend.

The occasion for my sojourn by the river was a girlie getaway to celebrate the upcoming marriage of my good friend, Fiona. She first happened across Houseboat Geanna while watching reality TV, when it won an episode of Four in a Bed.
This sounded very promising indeed. And when we stepped aboard on Friday evening it was clear to see why this boat was a winner!

All 3 bedrooms were en-suite with plasma screen televisions. The kitchen was bigger than the one in my last London apartment. Plus it had a dishwasher - something I don't even have in my current apartment!
Sleep came easy thanks to the luxurious bed linen and comfy mattresses (we were most surprised!), not to mention the fresh, country air.
We were having too much fun to bother making our beds properly in the mornings!!
Geanna was moored in picturesque Henley-on-Thames, a small town just outside of London famed for it's annual Regatta.

As part of our stay on Geanna we were treated to a complimentary 2 hour river cruise, allowing us to take in the classic English scenery while somebody else sailed the boat on our behalf. We treated this as an opportunity to indulge in Bloody Mary's without fear of breaking any drink-driving laws!
The open-plan saloon area (kitchen, dining/living room) opened out onto a fabulous little front deck, where we spent many a happy hour drinking wine, munching on nibbles and reminiscing about the twists and turns of our lives.

And, when it took our fancy, we wandered down to the opposite end of the boat, where another outside area awaited. One boat with two great spots to soak up the sun and enjoy alcoholic beverages! Bliss!
Geanna truly was a home away from home. Personal touches, such as pictures on the wall and a vase of flowers, gave this houseboat a warm, cosy, lived-in feel. And I almost wish it had been unseasonably cold so we could have tried out the wood-burning fire!
Instead we entertained ourselves by making sock puppets based on the bride-to-be.

And threw a surprise Afternoon Tea, complete with cake, champagne, strawberries and a vintage tea-pot commemorating the marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana!
Our little group have nothing but glowing reports about Geanna and I would heartily recommend it to anyone - even dogs! Yes, you are allowed to bring your dog on holiday on Boat Geanna. Both them and you are pretty much gauranteed an amazing time as the boat and the river-side setting are stunning.
